Think Social Problems 2013 11.pdf

as the 21st century approaches, we are entering into the second decade of the century, a time that can be thought of as the beginning of the third millennium. i wonder what the future will be like. one thing i am confident of is that it will be far more interesting than the present. when it comes to what i call the "present," i think it is a time of great despair, and at the same time, great opportunity. as i look into the future, i see people at the end of the new millennium standing on the shoulders of a computer as tall as the himalayas. they will be able to soar into space, fix an illness, find the cure for cancer, and discover the secrets of the universe.

for those who are attracted to the technology of computing, the pace at which new technologies emerge is amazing. i remember attending an international symposium for electronic visualization in 1990, when 3-d visualization was very rare. there were only two 3-d simulations of real-world problems. now, the number of 3-d simulations in the public domain, and how frequently they are used, is astounding. computational thinking is now part of the national conversation, and those who do not understand it are in the minority. we have to learn to live in this new world.

the national science foundation, in its greatest moments, has always tried to be a friend to the sciences. as a foundation, we encourage scientists and engineers to think about how science and engineering can help society and help the economy. how do we understand society? what is the economy? how do we understand people? how do we understand the universe? how do we understand ourselves? how do we solve problems? how do we create new things?
